The club is dedicated to teaching martial arts using European and Oriental blades and promoting fun exercise. We’re working with the Silk Road School of the Sword (SRS) and their instructors every Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 on the grassy knolls next to the school. The teachers emphasize practical, ethical combat skills, studied in an informal atmosphere of honor and mutual respect.
During the lessons, students use sparring tools called shinai – safe bamboo practice swords to teach Katana – and European Longsword as they practice various techniques. The first half hour is devoted to warming up, stretching, and doing short drills – while the last hour and a half is spent sparring.
The club requires all members to wear fencing masks and sparring gloves. Eleven people attended the inaugural class but hopes are high that the club will grow dramatically. The fee is $5 per session.
The club would also like to extend an invitation to all artists who might benefit from watching martial arts in action and practicing their sketching skills. If you are interested in watching, plan to arrive by 4:00 once the members are done warming up and have begun sparring.
