Cogswell Kicks Off 2nd Annual After School Program with San Jose’s Independence High School

COGSWELL COLLEGE KICKS OFF 2ND ANNUAL “AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM” FOR FALL 2014 IN CONJUNCTION WITH SAN JOSE’S INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL

Sunnyvale, CA, November 10, 2014 – Cogswell College, a leading educational institution offering a unique, project-based curriculum fusing Digital Art, Engineering and Entrepreneurship, has just commenced its 2nd Annual “After School” program with 48 students currently enrolled.

Cogswell College designed this program in conjunction Mr. Jack Aiello a senior instructor with San Jose’s Independence High School. The After School program represents a shared endeavor between Cogswell College and Independence High School, and is made possible for the high school through a five year grant from Goodwill to Independence High and Cogswell’s support of providing free instructions and usage of their studios and equipment.

The Cogswell After School program will run for eight weeks, and offers courses in the areas of Digital Audio, Digital Animation and Game Design. This unique program engages students in a project-based learning environment led by Cogswell faculty, and features classes modeled on a redesigned Cogswell curriculum – one that is specifically suited to meet the needs of high school students.

Abraham Chacko, Cogswell’s VP of Admissions & Marketing, and facilitator for the After School program, said, “The teenagers who attend Independence High School are from the Silicon Valley, so when they realize that we are offering custom designed classes to them in digital animation, game design and digital audio, their ears really perk up! They know that future jobs within companies like Disney and Pixar might be within reach, if they have the knowledge and exposure to these digital art forms early in life.”

“We are delighted to be in the second year of this program. Last year, the response to this wonderful program was terrific. We had 50 students participate in 2013,” Grettel Castro-Stanley, Independent High School’s Principal said. “Those students reported back to us that they learned a lot, were inspired and encouraged, and had a great deal of fun in the process.”

Independence High School’s Jack Aiello is a “Project Lead The Way” – trained instructor who teaches Introduction to Engineering Design at Independence High. He is also a coordinator of that school’s pre-engineering program, Space Technology Engineering Academy Magnet (STEAM). He serves as the faculty facilitator for the Cogswell After School program in tandem with Chacko.

“Running an after school class with 20 students at Cogswell, working in a project-based environment, is far more advantageous than the more traditional teaching model that involves lectures or video presentations at the front of a classroom of 35 or more students,” says Aiello. “The hands-on computer and audio equipment, programming tools and industry-experienced instructors that Cogswell offers us are a tremendously valuable resource. The partnership with Cogswell allows our students an exciting peek into the ‘behind-the-scenes’ world of the digital creative arts, and gives them a leg up into the super competitive, post graduate world of securing creative jobs in the digital space.”

Located in San Jose, CA, Independence High School is one of the largest high schools in Northern California. With a student body of approximately 3200 for the 2014-2015 year, Independence is also part of the East Side Union High School District. The high school is one of about 400 State of California school participants in the California Partnership Academies (CPA) program. The program stresses rigorous academics and career technical education, with a career focus. Schools involved with the CPA program boast the highest graduation rates (95%) in the state, attributing this to their focus on pre-engineering and technical education programs and smaller learning communities.

Day 2 at GDC – Update: 002

Cogswell College at GDC 2012

Ok everyone,

So today at the Cogswell booth has been really interesting. Interest among people on the Expo floor is still high and people are stopping by to say “hi” and check us out. As I mentioned before, The IGF Awards was last night and a big group of students went. A game developer from Montreal won the grand prize and there wasn’t much disagreement among the students that he deserved it. Everyone from Cogswell who played his game loved it, so if you guys wanna check out the game, it’s called Fez and it’s by a developer called Polytron.

There has been a lot of talk about the different audio technologies that have been developed and are being shown here as well. Several of our students are excited and hopeful about taking the information and knowledge and bringing it back to the school to try and incorperate it. I can’t wait to see what comes of it.

Cogswell College at GDC 2012

Hey Blog Readers!

I was here bright and early to watch everyone start rolling into the Expo floor. Last night around the city there were serveral parties hosted by various game companies and the like, so needless to say, this morning everyone is a little tired. But the energy is picking up and there are smiles on every face. Our student volunteers are doing a great job as well, so a big thank you so far goes out to Matt, Dashiell, Jennifer, Nick, Andrew S, Shane and Andrew M! You guys are rockin’ it!

Alumni Interview: Stephanie Lostimolo

Stephanie Lostimolo

I’m pretty excited about this one everyone! I got super lucky and was able to get in contact with an alum that I have been trying to find forever. Stephanie Lostimolo is one of the biggest reasons I came to know about Cogswell, I have been a fan of her art since High School. So…. enough gushing, let’s get down to this interview.

Zombie: Thanks for taking time out of your day to talk to us. I am not going to waste any time here, would you mind giving us an overview of where you work and what your job is?

Stephanie:  I currently work for Michael Curry Design in Portland, Oregon and Faerieworlds LLC and Imaginosis in Eugene, Oregon.

For Curry, I serve as a concept designer for theater, music festivals, theme parks, and other venues. I also work as a graphic designer for Faerieworlds LLC (producers of art/fantasy/music festivals on the east and west coast), creating the look and feel for all of their websites, posters, advertisements, brochures, program books, and other collateral. For Imaginosis, I design countless books, posters, calendars, t-shirts, hats, magazine articles, advertisements, and other items for clients such as Brian Froud & Siegfried & Roy.

I also make and sell paintings, prints, jewelry, and mixed media art in my “spare time.”

Zombie: So what is a typical work day look like for you?

Stephanie: It varies. On days when I work in Curry’s office, it’s like a normal work day for anyone. I wake up at 6am, drive an hour to work in traffic, work an 8-hour day doing all sorts of design work, and then I drive an hour home. Then I work on my freelance gigs in the evenings. I work on Faerieworlds and Imaginosis stuff at home.

Zombie: Was there anything that surprised you about your job when you first started?

Stephanie: Deadlines. Must. Be. Met.

I always knew this but it didn’t hit home until I got a real job. All personal work goes out the window when someone is paying you to be their design hero!

Zombie: Would you mind listing some of the projects that you have worked on in the past?

Stephanie:

Zombie: What would you say you find most rewarding about your job?

Stephanie: The ridiculously long list of things I’ve been a part of. I like to point at something in a theater or a store and say “I WORKED ON THAT!” It’s a very satisfying feeling and it definitely makes writing the checks for my student loan payments easier every month.

Zombie: Do you have any advice for students who are maybe preparing for a job like yours?

Stephanie: I hope you like working! Laziness is a disease that is sweeping the nation; luckily for hard workers, it’s easy to stand out in this sea of lazy folk. My significant other happens to be my art director and owner of Faerieworlds and Imaginosis, otherwise I don’t think I’d have time for a personal relationship. Sleep is optional, and options only open up after the work is done.

Zombie: Are there any other qualities a person could have that would help them along?

Stephanie: You must also know how to take care of yourself. Remember to stand up for yourself when asking for money and never tolerate being treated badly. Seek jobs where you feel appreciated, but know that you will never be worshipped again the way you may have been in school or at home. That is a very hard thing to learn.

Zombie: Is there anything you would like to leave the students of Cogswell with?

Stephanie: Cogswell helped me prepare for my career by introducing me to other like-minded people who inspired me to keep moving forward. The contacts I made at Cogswell lead directly to my first job, and all of my jobs to this day.

When I started at Cogswell I thought I wanted to be a 3D animator. I soon realized 3D was not for me, and that I was more of a 2D person. It was an easy transition and I’m glad the school supported my choice to abruptly change gears.
