Chinese Educators Visit Cogswell College

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

ChineseInstuctors

On Monday, September 20, 2010, almost 30 Deans and Professors representing a number of universities in the Guangzhou region of Southern China toured the Cogswell Campus. They were traveling the West Coast visiting universities and digital media companies. The group primarily consisted of animators and programmers who were tasked with learning more about digital media education methods and to build relationships with companies within this industry.

The visit was made possible through the good offices of Cogswell Trustee, Richard Chuang. Dr. Chester Haskell, President, welcomed them to campus and Michael Martin, Dean of the College gave them a tour of our facilities. Questions really began to flow once they saw “The Offering,” the first animated short film produced under the umbrella of the Project X class, on the big screen in the Dragon’s Den.

Tingyue ‘Laura’ Zhu, one of the Chinese students currently studying at Cogswell under our partnership with the Communications University of China in Beijing, acted as translator. The group wanted to know how students got into the class, how many terms the students worked on the project, what kind of credit students received for such an intensive effort and how this tied in with other classes they were taking. They were definitely impressed with the quality of the production.

Dr. Haskell will be visiting China in a few weeks and will continue to foster our ties to Chinese universities and digital media companies.

Cogswell Audio Faculty Speak at AES Conference

Monday, September 27th, 2010

LarrytheOCogswell’s newest Digital Audio Technology faculty, Larry the O, is slated to speak at the upcoming Audio Engineering Society Conference in San Francisco in November. He will join Peter Drescher in a spirited “cage match” discussion about sound, music, interactive audio, game soundtracks, hardware, software and audio production.

The two met at Berklee College of Music in 1976 and have been arguing both sides of any audio issue ever since. Moderator, Steve Horowitz who will referee the match, will ask a series of questions and give the pair a specific amount of time to discuss it before the gong sounds.

Topics might include:

  • How many audio file formats do you really need?
  • Giving the producer what they want, even when they have no idea what that is
  • Just exactly what IS “audio quality”?
  • Analog vs. Digital, Tubes vs. Transistors, Tape vs. Hard drive, Vinyl vs. CD – Improved technology has made audio production better, right?
  • You say that sounds “annoying” like it’s a bad thing!
  • “I promise never to program a computer to play something I can’t” (aaaand … fight!)
  • Buying gear and maintaining your studio: hardware, software, musical instruments vs. planned obsolescence and audio business models
  • “We need it yesterday” – planning and timing of audio projects (Larry’s fireside rant)

Larry the O, Toys In the Attic principal, joined the Cogswell faculty this semester and will be teaching Studio Recording 1, a required course in the Digital Audio Production track of the DAT program.

Cogswell Announces New Game Audio Concentration

Friday, September 10th, 2010

DigAudio

Who creates the sounds you hear in a game? Who builds the programs that drive the way players and sound interact in games? Why not you?

If this is your dream, then check out the Cogswell College’s new Game Audio major. Cogswell Polytechnical College will begin accepting students in the new educational opportunity in the Fall 2010. The program has two tracks, Game Audio Production and Game Audio Programming.

The Production track lets students create audio assets that play within a game, for example the music, sound effects or dialog, add another level of sensory experience to the game play.

The Programming track is for students who wish to setup how audio assets will interact with the player in response to game play. Sounds can trigger actions the player must take or avoid or influence the player’s behavior during the game.

All Game Audio students have the opportunity to work on multi-disciplinary teams in instructor-led projects to gain direct experience in applying game audio skills. These two tracks complement the existing Audio Production and Audio Engineering tracks of the Digital Audio Technology degree program.

For more information please contact Tim Duncan, Director of Digital Audio Technology at Cogswell Polytechnical College, at tduncan@cogswell.edu.

Cogswell’s Game Studio Class Develops Game Prototype for CAH

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

CAHAlbert Chen met James Zhang about ten years ago when they were both at LucasArts. Now Chen is the Director of the Cogswell College Game Development Program and Zhang is the Founder and CEO of Concept Art House (CAH) in San Francisco.

As often happens in the Game Industry, the two met again and discovered they could help each other. CAH is an international art service provider and original intellectual property (IP) developer focused on digital entertainment formats. Chen and the students in his class, Game Studio, produce games. The two decided to team up. Cogswell’s Game Studio is now working with CAH on a game prototype using their Daomu IP.

The game will be a character driven, action-adventure game based on characters and situations that appear in the DAomu graphic novel series. The prototype will be available to play at the NYC Comic Con in October and GDC China in December.

Check out Cogswell’s Game Studio Promo on YouTube.
