CUC_1Over the course of the last year, Cogswell hosted 5 exchange students from the Communications University of China (CUC) in Beijing.  While attending Cogswell they focused on engineering, animation and game development.  At the end of the year they produced 2 short animations and  a game.  Their experiences here at Cogswell transcended classroom experiences as they squeezed in visits to various U.S. cities and local attractions.

CUC_2Three of the students have been accepted into grad schools – one at UCLA and two at Sheridan College in Canada. They will be working on their Masters degrees in visual effects and animation.  As Cogswell moves forward and expands its international exchange program with CUC, this first group of students has set a high standard for the students who will follow.

CUC_3“I am very excited to have been able to work with a great group of talented young artists and engineers who have a bright future in these global industries.  I know that they have made a great impact on the student body here at Cogswell as well as the staff.  I wish them much success as they move forward in their careers.”  ~ Brandace King, International Student Coordinator.

The students depart Cogswell this week.  Before they left, they presented their year-long projects to the delight of faculty and students!

Ambassador Blog by Josh Hodges, Digital Art & Animation Major

Monday, April 26th, 2010

JoshHodgesHi! My name is Josh Hodges and I am an Ambassador at Cogswell College. I am a Senior in Digital Art & Animation Program – majoring in Entertainment Design.

How are your classes coming now that we’re getting to the end of the semester?  What’s the hardest (most challenging, takes the most work, however you want to work it) class?  What’s the easiest class?

My classes are getting a little bunched up, finals are piling up but I always push though. My most challenging class is still Project X, it is constantly pushing my limits and making me learn new things. I never thought I would be doing texture and shader work on a movie but now I am, and I love it. I usually go to movies and look at the design work and art direction but I recently went to see How To Train Your Dragon and found myself checking out all the texture work on it. I loved that movie. My easiest class this semester is probably Ethics, even though I have a 10 page paper due soon. It is a fun and interesting class where we discuss different schools of ethical thought. On top of that, it is taught by Richard Schimpf, this is one of the coolest teachers on campus.

What has been your most favorite class while at Cogswell?  Were there any classes that you took that you thought you might not like at first but then ended up loving? (more…)

The Second Annual River Bend Film Festival will be held Friday, April 30 & Saturday, May 1 at the Century Center, and is sponsored by Mid America Filmmakers and Downtown South Bend. The History of Cogswell College

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Cogswell Campus 1915

Dr. Henry Daniel Cogswell, born in Tolland, Connecticut, March 3, 1820, was a man of both vision and distinguished heritage. The Cogswell family was descended from Alfred the Great and Charlemagne and emigrated to America in 1635 from England. Dr. Cogswell cherished his family crest and motto, “Nec Sperno Nec Timeo,” which means, “I neither despise nor fear.” As his ancestors numbered among America’s pioneers, so was Dr. Cogswell’s own life one of pioneering and service.

Henry D. Cogswell had a humble childhood. It was necessary for young Cogswell to go to work at an early age in the New England cotton mills. After a day’s work in the mills, he spent the evening hours reading, writing, and learning arithmetic. Eventually he became a teacher, but after one year, he decided to enter the dental profession. Upon completion of his training at the age of 26, Dr. Cogswell began the practice of dentistry in Providence, Rhode Island. One year later, in 1846, he married Caroline E. Richards, daughter of Ruel Richards, a manufacturer in Providence.

When gold was discovered in California, Dr. Cogswell followed the pioneering urge he inherited from his ancestors. He left for California by sea and after 152 days aboard the clipper ship “Susan G. Owens”, landed in San Francisco on October 12, 1849. Rather than enter the rugged and uncertain business of mining, he practiced dentistry and established a mercantile business in the mining region. After several successful years of dental practice and real estate investments and buoyed by his ever-present strength of purpose, Dr. Cogswell became one of San Francisco’s first millionaires.

Dr. Cogswell was a pioneer in his profession as well. In 1847 he designed the vacuum method of securing dental plates. In 1853 he performed the first dental operation in California using chloroform.
