Alum Tobiah Marks Recalls His Time at Summer Camp

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Tobiah Marks just completed a dual degree in Digital Arts Engineering and Software Engineering.  As Tobiah recalls his involvement at Cogswell College, he remembers the start of it all: Being in high-school and attending Cogswell summer camps.  Here is his story:

How many summers did you participate in camp?

Three I believe . . .

What courses did you take at Cogswell’s summer camp?

Digipen Game Design (made a game in a week) and Maya 3D Modeling.

What was it like to be part of the summer camp experience?

Great. It was a lot of fun.

What did you learn?

Basic game programming and a lot about 3D Modeling which I hadn’t done before.

Did the camp have any influence on your major in college?

Not so much influenced but it encouraged what I was already thinking I wanted to do with my life.

Did the camp influence your decision to apply to Cogswell and enroll as a student?

VERY much so. Getting to know the staff and the students of Cogswell really helped me pick this school vs. others. The people here liked what I liked and were doing what I wanted to do.

What are the advantages of going to summer camp at Cogswell?

I was able to get to know the college. Plus, I was able to do the things I thought I wanted to do and see if I really liked it – and it’s just plain fun.

Fieldrunners Game Created by Cogswell Alumni

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Subatomic Studios Co-Founder, Sergei Gourski (2003), and fellow Cogswell Alumnus, Ash Monif (2002), are pleased to announce that as Apple approaches 1 billion downloads, their game, Fieldrunners, has been listed as one of the all-time top paid apps. The game was developed exclusively for the iPhone and iPod Touch platform.

Fieldrunners

Since its release in October 2008 Fieldrunners has been hailed for its amazing graphics, the flexibility and ease of its gameplay, its seamless interaction with the mobile devices other functions – like phone calls – and the smoothness of its animation. Fieldrunners is a Tower Defense game that offers gamers a diverse selection of upgradeable towers using a wide array of tactics and strategies against waves of unique land and air combatants.

TIME Magazine ranked Fieldrunners in its Top 10 Video Games for 2008 (not just mobile devices, but all video games). The game also won the Achievement in Art and Best Mobile Game at the recent 2009 IGF Mobile Festival.

Other reviews include: Macenstein’s Top 20 iPhone games of 2008 places Fieldrunners at number 1; Fieldrunners received an 8 out of 10 score from IGN; 4.5 out of 5 stars from Macworld; 9.5 out of 10 points from OXCGN.com; 5 out of 5 stars from What’s On iPhone; 8.75 out of 10 from Loot Ninja; 8.2 out of 10 from Art of the iPhone; 4 out of 5 stars from MODOJO and Curt Schilling of the Boston Red Sox loves Fieldrunners.

1UP in its review said, “Just remember to be close to a power source as time is sure to fly while playing Fieldrunners.”

Project X Team Protects Their Animation

Project X is a production class that provides students an opportunity to create an industry-quality animation.  Students go through an interview process in order to be a part of the class, which makes it a high honor to become part of the team.  Project X is currently working on their first 5-minute animation that will be released this month – providing nothing goes wrong!  The animation will then be taken to different conventions – like SIGGRAPH – where (we hope) they will be winning awards for their work.  Clips of the video will be posted to Cogswell College’s website once they become available, so check back to be one of the first to see it!

Summer Camp Opportunities

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Cogswell Polytechnical College’s  summer camps immerse students in a concentrated learning program that provides experience in a cutting-edge environment. Students will be able to join other creative teens who share their passion for game design, 3D modeling, art or digital music production. Our summer camps also offer students the chance to prepare for college by taking classes in a fun, hands-on environment.

Students will be exposed to working in a team and do the things that they only wished they could learn in their high school classrooms. Our instructors have experience in the Digital Media fields and are willing to share their passion with the students. Any student who comes to Cogswell’s camp will leave better prepared with better insight on what Digital Media has to offer. During the time spent at camp students will also learn about the college admissions process as they further their years of study in high school.

Upon completion of summer camp, students receive a Cogswell Certificate of Completion in their academic areas to show that they have completed 40 hours of work in their discipline of choice. We welcome all students entering grades 9-12 to participate in our programs.

Visit our web page on summer camps to find out about each program and how to enroll.
