Danish Short Session Canceled this Year

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Michael Grant, coordinator of the annual two-week special program offered by Cogswell to students of Grenaa Tekniske Gymnasium/IT College Denmark, tells us the global financial situation and cutbacks at his college will make it necessary to cancel the program this year. This would have been the seventh year for this international project. Danish students typically take courses in programming, Flash, 3D Modeling and Animation, and a variety of general education courses related to American history and society.

They will be missed, and we hope to resume our program in a year or two.

Allen Stetson Featured in 3D World Magazine

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Allen-StetsonCogswell alumnus, Allen Stetson (class of 1999), Lead Technical Director at DreamWorks, was featured in the ‘Inspiration’ section of 3D World Magazine’s December 2008 issue.

In the article he describes how after viewing the film, The Little Mermaid, in seventh grade he became fascinated by the way the artists handled light and the distortion of movement through water. He knew then, that this is the field in which he wanted to build his career and Cogswell was the college he chose to make his dreams a reality.

Cogswell recognized Allen as its Silicon Valley Campus Alumnus of the Year at Founders’ Day in March 2008. The award is given to alumni who have made contributions to their professions and had an impact on Cogswell.

Scripting for CG Added to Fall 2009 Schedule

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Learn how to use Python, which you can run on its own or control programs like Maya and Blender. Automate tasks you already know how to do and create tools that can help you save time and effort on your projects.  This is a class for artists, engineers, musicians, and others who understand the need for scripting, but don’t intend to work as programmers, or even for people who don’t understand the need for programming, but want to simplify their work flow.

Kevin Park has worked with Cogswell students and faculty this summer to design a class that is useful and enjoyable.

IGDA Event with Noah Falstein

IGDA Event with Noah Falstein

If you have to ask, then you missed a “you should have been there” event! Attendance was standing room only!!

First off, Noah Falstein shared the wisdom about Game Design that he has collected over a long career in this industry. Everyone walked away with some new insight into the trials and tribulations of creating a game that not only teaches something but keeps the player involved in the process.

Second, those who came actually had the chance to ask questions and talk to him after the presentation. How often do aspiring game developers get face-to-face time with an industry legend?

Third, you missed the opportunity to mingle and network with the great Silicon Valley IGDA members – people who are actually passionate about creating games and are doing what you want to do.

Last but not least – If you are interested in creating games, then you didn’t get to talk to the 15 or so game developers who brought projects to the event so they could get feedback from people who were there. What better way to learn than from someone who is out there trying!

All is not lost. Stay tuned for the next event collaboration between Cogswell and the Silicon Valley IGDA in September 2009!

Cogswell Alum Sean Velasco Interviewed in IGN

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

SeanV

Cogswell College alumus, Sean Velasco stopped by the IGN studio for an interview prior to the E3Expo. Sean currently works for WayForward Technologies in Los Angeles along with fellow alumni Steven Foote and Austin Ivansmith.

In the interview Sean says, “I was playing A Boy and His Blob one day and thought, man, this is such a great premise and we could execute so excellently on it with all of WayForward’s proprietary animation, with all of our awesome 2D platformer experience.”

Since the company already had a good relationship with Majesco who owned the rights to the game, the team threw together a pitch about their concept for A Boy and His Blob. Sean also discussed the game design decisions, including the use of 2D rather than 3D art.

What iPhone App Would You Create?

With the new advances in phone technology, it is amazing what people have come up with.  Cogswell College alumni, Sergei Gourski and Ash Monif, created a game called Fieldrunners which was ranked “Top 10 Vide Games for 2008” by TIME Magazine.

Many people have found success in creating, launching, and selling iPhone applications. So Cogswell College is offering an iPhone application class where you can learn to turn your ideas into practical products.

Leave us a comment and let us know what iPhone application you would create.
